Description
Countless American students struggle to read. All educators oversee content area standards that are
related to literacy. We can all benefit from learning what cognitive scientists have discovered about the
reading brain. This hybrid course explores the wide spreading interest in the science of reading (SOR)
instruction. Through a variety of asynchronous type activities and independent exploration of the All
Ohio Literacy Modules participants will learn how the brain becomes rewired to read and what cognitive
scientists recommend for instructional literacy practice as well as the elements of structured literacy and
what The National Reading Panel found to be effective and evidence based practices for instruction. The
course content will highlight the importance of explicit phonics instruction, developing content
knowledge, and exposing readers to grade level text play in developing strong and successful readers.
