Description

This course is designed to enhance and grow the educators understanding of what cognitive science has
revealed in regards to the way brains develop the capacity and skill to read efficiently. Participants will
engage in experiences that will broaden their knowledge of the brain, the vast body of research existing on
explicit reading instruction, awareness of evidence based reading intervention, and the depth of the state's
literacy plan. As the demands of educators and school leaders are changing within the context of
continuous school reform, so are the needs of current and future instructional leaders to address the
stagnant and in some cases decreasing NAEP reading scores. This course will address how individuals can
increase their effectiveness of literacy teaching and provide support, guidance, and coaching to colleagues
in their respective districts and schools to leverage distinct improvement efforts related to literacy
achievement.
